How to Get Your Motorcycle License in Florida (2026 Guide)

Everything you need to know — from the permit to the DMV — explained by the instructors who've seen it all. FLORIDA RIDER GUIDE — 2026

By State Motorcycle Training  (813) 897-3885 ·  Tampa · Riverview · St. Petersburg · Orlando  ·  Updated 2026 So you've decided to ride. Maybe you finally bought that bike you've been eyeing for years, or maybe you just want the freedom of two wheels on a Sunday morning — either way, getting your Florida motorcycle license is actually a lot more straightforward than most people expect. I've seen hundreds of students walk onto our range nervous as anything and leave two days later with their endorsement in hand. Here's exactly how the process works.

A recent graduating class at State Motorcycle Training — Weekend classes run every week at our TampaRiverviewSt. Petersburg, and Orlando locations. All licensed Florida motorcycle riders — in just one weekend.

First, Understand What Florida Actually Requires

Florida doesn't let you just show up to a DMV and take a riding test anymore. Since 2008, the state has required all new motorcycle riders to complete an approved Basic Rider Course (BRC) before they can get their motorcycle endorsement. This isn't just a formality — it's genuinely useful training, and passing it means you skip the DMV riding exam entirely.

The course is built on curriculum from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and is overseen by Florida's Rider Training Program (FRTP). Any school that's FRTP-contracted and MSF-certified — like StateMotorcycleTraining.com — is authorized to issue your completion certificate, which you bring straight to the DMV.

Step-by-Step: How to Get Your Motorcycle License in Florida

STEP 1

Make Sure You Have a Valid Florida Driver's License

Before you can take the riding course, you'll need a valid Florida driver's license. If you already have one, you're all set — skip ahead to Step 2.

🌎 Out-of-state students are welcome at all four of our locations — TampaRiverviewSt. Petersburg, and Orlando. You can absolutely take the MSF Basic Rider Course with us regardless of where you're licensed. However, endorsement and reciprocity rules vary by state — we recommend checking with your home state's DMV to confirm how Florida's BRC completion certificate transfers to a license or endorsement where you live.

STEP 2

Enroll in an MSF Basic Rider Course at State Motorcycle Training

This is the main event. The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is a 15-hour program split over two days — 5 hours of riding per day on our closed range. It's broken into two parts: an online eCourse you complete at home before you arrive, and hands-on riding range training with a certified instructor at one of our four Florida locations. All booking is done online — simply choose your preferred location below and pick a date that works for you.

📅 BOOK YOUR MOTORCYCLE CLASS — CHOOSE A LOCATION

Before Day 1 — Complete the eCourse at Home

Once you register with State Motorcycle Training, you'll get a link to the online eCourse. Plan for about 5 hours — you can complete it at your own pace over several evenings. It covers motorcycle types, controls, safety strategies, and the mental side of riding. Don't skip it. The in-person days go much smoother when you've done the reading.

📚 MSF E-COURSE & STUDY RESOURCES

The eCourse is included when you register with State Motorcycle Training. You can also preview the MSF's official study materials anytime at msf-usa.org.

Day 1 & Day 2 — On the Range

Each riding day is approximately 5 hours of hands-on range time at our TampaRiverviewSt. Petersburg, or Orlando locations. You'll work through a comprehensive curriculum including — but not limited to:

  • Basic controls and throttle management

  • Straight-line riding and smooth stopping

  • Turning, shifting, and cornering

  • Quick stops and emergency swerving

  • Low-speed maneuvers like U-turns

  • Risk awareness and street strategy

  • Friction zone and clutch control

  • Countersteering and lane positioning

  • Emergency braking and crash avoidance

  • …and much more covered throughout the full MSF curriculum

All bikes, helmets, glasses, and gloves are provided. You do not need to own a motorcycle to take the course. We use 250cc bikes — light, manageable, and forgiving for beginners. At the end of Day 2, there's a short written knowledge test and a riding skills evaluation. Pass both, and your completion certificate is issued — please note that students must wait 48 hours after course completion before visiting the DMV to get their endorsement.

STEP 3

Visit the DMV and Get Your Endorsement

After waiting 48 hours from your course completion date, head to your nearest FLHSMV office with your BRC completion certificate from State Motorcycle Training and bring:

  • Your Florida driver's license

  • Your BRC completion certificate

  • Payment for the endorsement fee

They'll add the motorcycle endorsement directly to your license — no DMV riding test required.

What to Wear to the Course

This is one of the most common questions we get at our TampaRiverviewSt. Petersburg, and Orlando locations. Florida is hot, and people want to wear shorts and flip-flops. We get it — but please don't. The range requires:

Long pants (jeans or riding pants)

Long-sleeved shirt or jacket

Over-the-ankle boots or sturdy shoes

Helmet — we provide one, or bring your own DOT-approved helmet, gloves, and glasses

Gloves — we provide them, or bring your own full-fingered riding gloves

Eye protection — we provide glasses, or bring your own

The protective gear isn't just a rule — it's the same gear that protects you once you're riding on real roads. Per MSF research, proper helmet use reduces the risk of brain injury by 67% and the risk of death by 37%.

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

Realistically, from zero to licensed, you're looking at about 2–3 weeks total — mostly waiting for a class opening that fits your schedule. The actual course is just two days. Some students start on a Thursday evening with the eCourse and have their endorsement by mid-week the following week.

State Motorcycle Training offers weekend and weekday classes at all four Florida locations. Find a motorcycle class near you:

Will I Get Insurance Discounts?

Most major insurance companies offer a discount to riders who complete an MSF-certified course. The savings vary by insurer, so it's worth asking your insurance agent about it before your first renewal. Completing a course at State Motorcycle Training fulfills this requirement.

A Few Things No One Tells You Before the Course

You will stall the bike. Multiple times. So will everyone else. Our instructors across TampaRiverviewSt. Petersburg, and Orlando have seen it ten thousand times — they're not judging you, they're there to help you fix it.

The range gets hot. Especially in Florida summers. We provide water at all our locations so stay hydrated and come prepared.

Most people are nervous walking in. By the end of Day 1, most of that nervousness is gone. The course is designed to build confidence gradually — you won't be asked to do anything you're not ready for.

You don't need your own gear. All equipment — bikes, helmets, gloves, and glasses — is included at every State Motorcycle Training location. You're more than welcome to bring your own DOT-approved helmet, gloves, and glasses if you prefer.
